Tech Tip: Setting Up and Printing ADA-Compliant Signs

Manufacturing and Printing ADA-Compliant Signs

Software Setup

Direct Color Systems has not only manufactured a UV inkjet printer with the ability to create ADA-compliant / Braille signs, but DCS has made it easy enough for any user to create and print a sign. The software has been finely tuned to only require a few simple steps and the ADA sign can be printed. However, this doesn't mean that the advanced users can't go above and beyond to incorporate other features DCS offers, like TEXTUR3D™ printing, into their ADA signs. Contained within the ADA software package are different Queues that help categorize the type of sign that will be output. There are options for: ADA raised text and Braille only; ADA raised text and Braille with a full-color background (both first and second surface); and an option for printing Clear Braille dots.

Step 1

Design your ADA Sign. Color Byte has its own ADA module that has a Braille translator. As the user types, the Braille is translated and placed below the text while maintaining the appropriate spacing requirements.

Step 2

After the design is complete, all the user has to do is prime the different objects. This will be done to create the different height requirements on the Pictogram, Text and Braille.

Step 3

Once the priming is complete the file can be sent to the RIP. Select Print and Cut and then the "DJUVADA Raised Objects Only" Queue.

Step 4

The Image will now show in the Queue. This Queue is designed to output 2 passes. The first pass will be the height and the second pass will lay down white and color. Press the Auto Return Button on your printer and right-click and print the image.

Printing & Adhesion

Once the file setup is complete, the printing is ready to start. Direct Color Systems offers a new addition to its InkMark™ UV product line, InkMark UV Acrylic. This acrylic has a matte finish with the print-receptive coating, making it ADA compliant and a direct print –without adhesion promoter –solution. However, if the user has his or her own Cast Acrylic, DCS now offers an Acrylic Adhesion Promoter. This promoter was designed specifically with ADA sign manufactures in mind and can be applied to a variety of different acrylics without altering the finish of the material and providing a durable finished product.
