Technical Bulletin #23

Date: August 10, 2000
Subject: USB / Parallel Printer Adapter Available

As is the case with most printers, the Millennium printer uses a parallel interface to connect with PCs. Since most PCs come equipped with only one parallel port, finding a way to connect the Millennium AND another printer to a PC at the same time has been problematic.

In the past, we have recommended that users NOT use switchboxes because our experience has been that this type of setup often results in data transmission problems. The only viable alternative was to add another parallel port to the PC.

Now there is another, simpler alternative IF the PC comes equipped with a USB port in addition to a parallel port. (Most PCs purchased after 1997 come equipped with both a parallel and a USB port.) PC owners can purchase an inexpensive USB Parallel Printer Adapter that will let you utilize the USB port, thus freeing up the parallel port for other devices. Plug the parallel end of the adapter cable into the Millennium and the USB connector end into the PC.

At DCS, we’ve tested the Keyspan USB Parallel Printer Adapter, model UP-6C, and found it to work flawlessly. The cable comes with an install CD and the installation directions are easy to follow. Use the Keyspan adapter on any PC running Windows 98 or Windows 2000. Retailing for approximately $39, the cable can be found at many electronics stores (we found ours at Circuit City)
